Very happy to see this news that echoes a recommendation we had on this blog regarding campaign money vs funding a legitimate cause would be better than buying more buttons and banners. Of course, Bloomberg isn’t running, but no doubt he is putting some of the money he would have spent campaigning to work for climate change.

“I’m committing $500 million to launch a new national climate initiative because climate progress can’t wait for the next President. Beyond Carbon will be the largest coordinated campaign to tackle the climate crisis ever undertaken in the U.S. and accelerate our transition to a 100% clean energy economy. Together, we’re taking the fight to the local level and leading where Washington won’t”. Michael Bloomberg

Admittedly, this wasn’t tied directly to his campaign, but it does make a clear political statement regarding the presidency, Washington. Imagine what would happen if the remaining campaigns picked up other causes? Would it be wrong if an underdog Dem who is not polling well championed a real cause and donated their campaign money? He or she still might not get to the debate but at least one message would get through–which would be more news than most are currently generating.

Taking such steps would go beyond the cerebral exercise of most thought leadership and most political agendas. It would move any candidate into actual leadership.

Let’s match the candidates to the cause. Any ideas?
